Here's to 37
We just celebrated my 37th birthday on Friday, and finally finished moving in the day before. I took the past week off to blast through the remaining boxes, and to figure out the final storage and organization solutions. With a large laundry room now, we decided not to bother renting a storage unit. It’s been interesting trying to make a larger-than-average-for-Seattle apartment and a large (again, for Seattle) storage unit fit into one, slightly larger apartment space that’s for sure.
For my birthday, Brian took the kids and me to my favorite restaurant, FlintCreek, for dinner. The kids made me a delicious gluten-free (of course) cake yesterday, and today, a friend and former local is in town, and we’re meeting for lunch at my second favorite restaurant, Nue.
It’s been a great end to a chaotic month and a half.
I told Brian I wanted to get a small can of sage green paint to create an accent wall behind our bed (while I pick up a tiny can of touch-up paint for the unpainted hole in the living room). At present, Little’s favorite color is sage green—she has a change of heart a lot, though.
For Christmas, I got her a new blanket in the color—she loves it. A few days ago, she left it on our bed after visiting me while readying for the day. Even though our home is engulfed in green plants, that blanket added a pop of cheery, sage-green softness to the room that left me with an instant comforting feeling. That (color) would be perfect on “the” wall, I thought.
For some reason, I’ve always struggled to figure out what to put on the wall behind a bed. I want things to look balanced and peaceful.
(And searching for ideas on Pinterest or a search engine just overwhelms me.)
Although I sleep like crap when the head of the bed is up against a window,—like in previous places we’ve lived where the window was the only place the bed could fit—the window took away the what to put on the wall decision. We don’t have any large paintings or photographs to take up the space—and I generally try not to buy decor simply to serve a function. I buy items that offer (me, at least) a visceral, emotional response that makes me think, My daily experience will benefit if this displayed in my home and I can see it every single day. So, a soft, sage green accent wall it is for now with the plan to create mixed media water color paintings in 11 by 16”, matted frames to complete the room. (I found these inexpensive, plastic frames* in 2022 for my Seattle photos. Much better as a renter anyhow—no risk of shattered glass during moves, even though I try to avoid plastic like the plague. However, high-quality, minimal wear-and-tear items can last a lifetime+, so why not plastic when it’s better suited to fit a need, right?)
